Metrology of dental models manufactured by 3d printers in horizontal and vertical positions

The aim of this study was to analyze variations in the 3D dimensional accuracy of dental models manufactured by additive manufacturing, evaluating the influence of horizontal versus vertical printing orientation on the build platform. A single digital STL file (SETUP1), generated with Orchestrate3D orthodontic planning software, was used. From this file, 80 models were fabricated using 3D printing: 40 with horizontal orientation and 40 with vertical orientation. The analysis of dimensional accuracy seeks to provide clinicians with objective criteria on the reliability of the reproduction process to support the choice of the most appropriate orientation according to the requirements of each dental discipline. The physical models were digitized using the Carestream CS 3600 intraoral scanner and the files were imported into Geomagic Control X (Cx). Using a best-fit algorithm, the digitized meshes were superimposed on the original master file (SETUP1) for structural comparison. The results established a correlation between dimensional accuracy and printing orientation. Horizontally printed models exhibited greater accuracy than vertically printed ones. The average accuracy of vertical models was below 67%, while that of horizontal models exceeded this threshold.References
