Abstract

This study examined the influence of the intraosseous position of permanent maxillary canines on their ability to erupt normally or become impacted. A literature review was conducted using Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/) to find information on risk factors, etiology, clinical consequences, and management strategies for canine impaction. A retrospective observational design was used, selecting previous studies that addressed the prediction of maxillary canine impaction using panoramic radiographs and other radiological measurements. The sector definition developed by Ericson and Kurol in 1988, as modified by Lindauer et al. in 1992, was applied to classify the position of impacted canines. Patients who began treatment in 2022 at the Interceptive Orthodontics Clinic of the Argentine Dental Association (CAO) were included. The inclusion criteria were patients under 12 years of age with erupted first molars and maxillary incisors and unerupted canines and premolars. Patients with prior maxillofacial surgery, significant dental trauma, or systemic conditions affecting tooth eruption were excluded. Preliminary findings suggest that the canine position in relation to the sectors defined by Lindauer et al. provides a useful classification for predicting impaction. Evaluating the maxillary canine position in relation to the root of the maxillary lateral incisor on panoramic radiographs is fundamental for the diagnosis and management of impaction. The sectorbased classification offers a practical tool for identifying at-risk patients, facilitating early intervention.
