Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial condition that affects both the supporting and protective tissues of the teeth. Globally, it shows a high prevalence, and in Argentina, studies have demonstrated that 96.8% of the adult population presents some degree of gingival pathology, while approximately 14.3% requires complex periodontal treatment, according to the Argentine Society of Periodontology. Given this scenario, the main challenge is to provide treatment tailored to each patient’s needs. Public health programs that incorporate effective preventive strategies and oral health promotion, as well as coordinated efforts among governmental bodies, healthcare systems, and academic institutions, are essential. Within this framework, the routine implementation of the Basic Periodontal Examination plays a key role. This tool allows for rapid identification of periodontal status, guides clinicians regarding the need for further diagnostic procedures, and facilitates appropriate clinical decision-making for individualized treatment planning.References
